All Hands Topside for Stores Load

Below are typical pictures of how food and parts are loaded on a submarine prior to deployment.  Yes, it is a very manual and laborious job and often requires crew from multiple departments of the boat.

 In civilian industries, it is not quite that difficult to load parts into the warehouse.  But often times, many of those parts in the warehouse can be critical to the success of your organization when a component goes down and it takes your entire processing line with it.

When it comes to identifying, analyzing and loading spare parts into a CMMS for a new build facility or even just a new product line, that process can be very similar to the above pictures.  It is often a very laborious task, it takes you away from your primary responsibilities and requires people from many different departments to get it done correctly.

Typically, the process goes something like this:

Maintenance/Reliability Manager, “Now that the new product line is installed and up and running, we need to make sure we get all of the parts we need into the warehouse.  Make that happen (Reliability Engineer/Maintenance Supervisor/Planner).”

Poor Soul, “How am I supposed to know what equipment was installed and what parts we need?”

Maint/Rel Mgr, “All of the equipment manuals and turnover documents are in a pile in the other room.  Some may even come with lists of Recommended Spare Parts.  Good luck.  By the way, we don’t want the new line to go down and not have the parts to fix it.”
